Configuring: Classify Fields

The values of a selected field within a dataset can be classified according to your requirements. This operation needs to be carried out for each field that has values to be classified.

Example: Classify fields

Steps to configure

  1. Field selection: Select the field to which you would like to assign classes.

  2. Define data classes: Define classes to be assigned to the data values.

  3. Timestamp classes: Define classes to be assigned to the timestamps.

  4. Null selection: Assign null and unclassified values to a class.

  5. Execute: Field values are assigned to the user-defined classes.

Step 1: Field selection

Select the field to which you would like to assign classes, and assign a name to the classification field.

  • Field selection: Select the required field from the drop down list of available fields.

  • If no double, integer or timestamp fields are available, the [Next] button is disabled, and no configuring of the classes is possible.

  • Default: The first field is automatically selected. Only double, integer and timestamp fields can be selected.

  • Minimum configuration: at least one field must be selected.

  • Classification field: Assign a valid name to the classification field. Spaces in the field name are not accepted.

Step 2: Define data classes

This step only shows when a data field is selected in step 1.

Assign a class to the values of selected field data. If the classes or the minimum and maximum values are not valid, the [Add] button is disabled.

  • Selected field: The field containing the values to be classified is listed here.

    • The minimum and maximum values of the field are listed within the square brackets, together with the average value.

  • Class name: Provide a name for the added class.

    • Class names have to be a valid name.

  • Minimum: Define the minimum value to be included in the class.

    • Minimum can never be greater than maximum.

    • Check the box to include the minimum value.

  • Maximum:

    • Maximum must be greater than minimum.

    • Check the box to include the maximum value.

  • Default: all text boxes are blank

  • Minimum: at least one class must be defined, including the class name, the minimum and the maximum values.

Step 3: Timestamp classes

This step only shows when a timestamp field is selected in step 1.

Assign a class to the values of selected timestamps. If the classes or the minimum and maximum values are not valid, the [Add] button is disabled.

  • Selected field: The field containing the values to be classified is listed here.

    • The first and last timestamp values of the field are listed within the square brackets.

  • Class name: Provide a name for the added class.

    • Class names have to be a valid name.

  • Minimum: Define the earliest timestamp to be included in the class.

    • Minimum values can never be greater than maximum.

    • Check the box to include the minimum value.

  • Maximum: Define the latest timestamp to be included in the class.

    • Maximum must be greater than minimum.

    • Check the box to include the maximum value.

  • Default: all text boxes are blank

  • Minimum: at least one class must be defined, including the class name, the minimum and the maximum values.

Step 4: Null selection

Specify how the null and unclassified values must be classified.

  • Class names have to be a valid name.

  • Default: Both null and unclassified values are selected as null.

  • Minimum configuration:none, classifying these values is optional.

Step 5: Execute

The column with classes will be generated, classifying the values of a particular field within the dataset.
